20-EMA Pullback Strategy

Taught by Rayner Teo

A strong trend rarely moves in a straight line. It pushes, then pauses and drifts back a little, then pushes again. That drift back is a pullback, a short move against the trend before it carries on. The whole idea here is to buy those dips instead of chasing the highs, because you get in at a better price with the trend still on your side.

The 20-period exponential moving average, or 20 EMA, is the line most pullback traders lean on to time it. An EMA is an average of the last twenty bars that leans on the most recent ones, so it hugs price closely and turns quickly. In an uptrend the 20 EMA slopes up and price keeps bouncing off it, which turns the line into a moving floor. When a pullback drifts down into that line and stalls, you have one spot to watch instead of a whole chart to guess at.

The plan is to wait for price to reach the 20 EMA while the trend is clearly up, then look for buyers to show up before you commit. A reversal candle like a hammer or a bullish engulfing at the line is the usual sign that the dip is done, and many traders enter on a break of the small swing high that follows. The stop sits just below the pullback low, which keeps the risk small and the reward worth taking. Win rate and risk management still decide the result more than any single entry, so the honest way to find out whether this works on your market is to backtest it on real history before you risk money.

What to take from it

  • Rayner walks through three pullback setups and folds them into one simple checklist he calls BFF, so you have a repeatable process instead of guessing.
  • The First Pullback setup is the one built on the 20 moving average, using it to judge whether a dip has been digested and is ready to continue the trend.
  • Across all of them he waits for candlestick confirmation like a hammer or a bullish engulfing, so you enter when buyers show real conviction rather than catching a falling knife.
